You're engaged, what next?

Congratulations, this is the most beautiful time in your life, feeling
the excitement and love of a new engagement.  It can also be slightly overwhelming so here is a step by step guide for
the early days following the world’s most beautiful question being asked and saying “yes”:

Nine simple steps

1.   SHARE YOUR NEWS

Contact your nearest and dearest, call your parents, siblings, grandparents, your closest family and friends before posting that all important Facebook/Instagram post.

2.  GET A MANICURE

Your hand will be on show, make sure your hands are looking their best to show off your new rock.

3.  PROTECT THE ROCK

This is not as exciting but make sure the ring is the right size, you don’t want it to slip off when you are washing your hands.  It is also important to add it to your insurance policy.

4.  ENJOY THE MOMENT

Your mind is probably swimming with ideas and excitement, and while it is important to start to think about planning your wedding make sure you take the time to enjoy the excitement of your engagement together as a couple.

5.   SAY THANKYOU

While I don’t want to sound like a voice from a 1950’s etiquette book, remember to thank people who congratulate you. While nothing is quite like a handwritten note to say thank you, a phone call or message is always nice when someone has taken the time to purchase a gift for you or send a card.  No one expects a handwritten note for a Facebook congratulations, as a rule of thumb reply in the same or similar style as the congratulations were given.

6.  START PLANNING

It is important to start thinking about when you would like to get married.  If it is potentially a busy time it is a good idea to book your ceremony and reception venue.  Start writing a guest list, you may need to edit this as time goes on and start to book your vendors.  It is unlikely you will find your wedding dress “off the rack” so be prepared to give yourself time, it may take many months.  I will focus more on the details of wedding planning in a future blog but here is a starting point:

Venue | Caterer | Celebrant or Minister |
Hairdresser | Makeup | Florist | Cake | Styling | Music | Dress | Invitations |
Accommodation

7.  BRIDAL PARTY

Think about those who you want around you, people who love you and support you people who are excited to see you both so happy.  It may be that you have one special person, you may have 6, your best man may be a woman.  Think about this decision, one wrong person can create lots of heartache.  It is your wedding and it is important to surround yourself with the most special people in your life.

8.  BE PREPARED

While you will enjoy all of the excitement and congratulations you may also receive lots of questions and well-meaning advice.  It is a good idea to have a couple of polite answers ready, such as “Thank you, at the moment we are just so excited about being engaged, we have lots of time to sort out the details.” Or “Thank you so much that is really kind, we will let you know if we need some help down the track

9.  ENGAGEMENT PARTY

An engagement party is a beautiful way to celebrate your engagement.  It is completely up to you if you have a back-yard BBQ, a cocktail afternoon or perhaps you will hire a function centre for a more formal event.   You may have a small gathering of close family and friends, or you may choose a larger event to celebrate with extended family and friends who you may not be able to include to share your wedding day.  Whatever you choose to do, enjoy celebrating with those who mean the most to the two of you.

Enjoy the moment

It’s all about the two of you….

As I said at the start of this blog, getting engaged is a beautiful time of your life.

Don’t put too much pressure on yourselves, enjoy being engaged, enjoy planning your wedding day.

It is not a big budget that makes a happy  marriage, it is the love between people.

Lastly, just from me to you - congratulations on your engagement! Beth x
